Our hands are probably the most important tools we have. They're used in so many ways in all kinds of industries and they're the parts of our bodies at greatest risk. In fact, it's estimated that one in three accidents involve people's hands.

• Risks - what is the likelihood that workers' hands can come to harm
• Consequences - the severity or degree of injury that could happen

The hazards fall into three main areas: mechanical, chemical and thermal.

Mechanical hazards arise when you handle sharp objects such as glass or metal parts. Chemical hazards come about when you're involved in cleaning jobs or handling chemicals. And jobs that mean handling hot items or working in cold conditions lead to thermal hazards.

Because in industry our hands are used so much there's a very large range of gloves and other protection, which can sometimes be confusing.
